Alan Bolt (1919 - 2019)

Sadly passed away last weekend having recently celebrated his 100th birthday

Cobham RFC was saddened to hear about the passing of Alan Bolt last Saturday (23 March). Alan had celebrated his 100th birthday at the start of the month (4 March).

Alan had been an inspiration to many as a teacher at Surbiton County Grammar School and then Esher College. He joined the school as a teacher in the late 1940s following war service and going to University. He was involved in many aspects of school life, both in and out of the classroom, including music and sport; he was respected by all pupils and students.

Alan was an outstanding musical conductor and ran a very prestigious choir in Claygate and supported music activities of former pupils in the area.

At Cobham, he joined the Old Surbitonians, having been a pupil at the school in the late 1930s. He played in the First XV but gave up his position to encourage and captain a new Second team in order to give permanent support to the Firsts.

When his playing days were over, he became a referee and later a trustee of the ground even though he had moved with his wife Alison to live in Cumbria. Latterly, his interests were hunting, horse racing and, of course, music. He ran specialist music group and conducted locally.

Alan's memory will be kept by so many of his former charges. He was an outstanding and much respected teacher - a real gentleman. We give thanks that we knew him.

Alan’s funeral will take place at 11.30am on Thursday 4 April in Ulverston, Cumbria.
