Cobham Rugby

Braemar Festival

Now in its 9th year, this festival has grown to be one of the premier U11 festivals, with teams attending from across the South East of England and further afield. The festival aims to pit strength against strength and the winners of the previous season's County championships are invited to compete against each other.

We are delighted to announce a very strong field for 2018: Reading, Windsor, Rosslyn Park, Battersea Ironsides, Chobham, Reeds, Warlingham, Sutton and Epsom, OC, Guildford and of course Cobham. The festival will be held on Sunday the 14th October 2018

The Braemar Club

The Braemar Club is a group of organised supporters within the Cobham Sports Association. They are mostly formed of the remnant of The Old Surbitonians Rugby and Cricket Clubs, who first purchased the ground in Fairmaile Lane, Cobham, in 1949.

The ground is called The Old Surbitonians Memorial Ground in memory of several ex-pupils of Surbiton County Grammar School who made the final sacrifice for their country during the Second World War. A plaque to their honour hangs above the bar in the Peter Marsh Pavilion.

The club was formed to keep ex-players in touch with each other and events at the ground. One former player, who had not been well, visited the ground in the mid 1980s, to restore his mental state by meeting some old colleagues who had meant so much to him in his playing days at Cobham. Regrettably, he could find none of those old friends at the ground..........and sadly journeyed home to the Midlands and committed suicide. At his funeral, when this was known, the Braemar Club came into existence.

The name Braemar comes from one of the buildings at Surbiton County Grammar School. It was the home of the youngest two years of school, so life at the age of eleven years began in a form room in Braemar Building.

The Braemar Club members meet regularly on the touchline at Cobham RFC home games and are distinguishable by their special ties and maroon sweaters. An Annual General Meeting  with Dinner is held in November each year to which wives/partners and special guests are invited.

The club also supports all sports at Cobham by making financial donations to those sports clubs for small items when it is difficult for those clubs to find instant money for small essentials – balls, shirts, bibs etc. We have recently helped both Netball and Lacrosse at Cobham.........and are open to any requests from other clubs.

There are some 100 members. The management of Braemar is in the hands of Pete Newland (Jt. Chairman/Treasurer) and Stuart Davies (Jt. Chairman/Secretary) to whom all requests (finances and membership) should be made.

At the 2013 AGM/Dinner a cheque was presented to Help for heroes from the sale of the Old Surbs Song Book (a publication of somewhat bawdy songs sung in the bar in days gone by).

Braemar is a major Section of the Cobham Sports Association, standing alongside Tennis, Netball, Lacrosse and Rugby.
