Cobham Rugby

U8 Home

Season 2018-19

Welcome everyone to the Cobham RFC ‘Mighty U8s’. The new rugby season is drawing near with our first training session on 2 September. The menace of idle Sunday mornings will soon be banished once more.

The U8 season builds on the introduction to competitive tag rugby in U7. The main changes are the pitches get bigger and the number of players on the pitch increases to six from four (link). Much as last, this season will be a combination of home/friendly training sessions and festivals with a small number of local clubs and in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Cobham RFC hosts a number of these festivals and a number are hosted by neighbouring clubs. Our first festival will be on 30 September at home (details to follow)

In line with RFU guidelines, at Cobham we run a no-streaming policy, which ensures that all abilities get equal time on the pitch during competitions. This is important and is proven to keep the kids playing for many more years. Here is a great video (link) of how we will be playing in our games and gives an insight into the basic rules of tag rugby.

Our training sessions will continue to focus on developing core skills, fundamentals of movement, coordination and balance, whilst keeping one eye on rugby skills, attack, defence, passing and, most importantly, sportsmanship. At times, our drills may not look very rugby-like, but this is intentional – our aim is to keep interest high, while teaching the basics from the ground up.

The success of our age group depends very much on your support. We welcome mums and dads, who want to get more involved than the occasional carpark duty. There are openings for coaches, first aiders and social committee members. You don’t have to be an expert, just enthusiastic. If you’d like to volunteer, please contact Moira or one of the coaches.

We are always on the look-out for new recruits. If you know anyone who is wondering what to do with their Sunday mornings and who might be interested in signing up for the ‘Mighty U8’, please point them our way or to Membership Secretary, Nicky Eggar . Prospective players are welcome to come and try out a couple of sessions before they commit. There also is a 'finder's fee' for any player whose friends sign up.

Our training sessions start at 9:30am and for the 2018/19 season will take place on the Portsmouth Road end of Pitch 2 (link). As usual, please park at Munro House next door.

We look forward to seeing you on Sunday.

Best,

The Coaches
